Torn mesh, frames that have gone out of square, screens that fall out when you touch them, and sun-rotted mesh that tears at a fingertip. All of it is repairable, and most of it while we are there.
Nobody should be replacing a window over a screen
Screen mesh is a consumable. It is meant to be replaced, and replacing it costs a tiny fraction of anything else on a window. Frames can be squared up, corners rebuilt, and where a frame really is finished, a new one can be made to the exact size of your opening.
That last point matters more in California than most places. A great deal of the housing stock predates standardised sizing, and homes have settled since. The screen from the hardware store does not fit, because the opening is no longer the size it was built at.
There is also a choice worth making while the mesh is out. Solar screen mesh blocks a substantial share of solar heat before it reaches the glass, which on a west-facing room here is the cheapest cooling improvement available.
Mesh wearing out is not a reason to replace anything but the mesh.

What California does to screens
Long open seasons and a great deal of sun.
UV destroys mesh
Sustained sun makes fibreglass mesh brittle until it splits at a touch. On a sun-facing elevation, mesh can reach the end of its life in a fraction of its rated span.
Screens are in use most of the year
A mild climate means windows stay open far more than elsewhere, so screens are doing their job almost continuously rather than for one season.
Solar gain is a real cost
West-facing rooms here can be genuinely unpleasant by late afternoon. Solar mesh intercepts heat before it reaches the glass, which is a cheaper intervention than anything involving the window itself.

Can you rescreen my existing frames?
Yes, and it is usually the best option. New mesh and spline in the frame you already have costs far less than new screens.

What is solar screen mesh?
