Windows that will not slide, will not stay open, will not lock or will not seal. Nearly all of it is a component that has worn out on a frame that is still perfectly sound, and nearly all of it is repairable.
Replacement windows are the most oversold product in the trade
Whole-home replacement quotes get written because that is where the margin is, not because fourteen windows failed simultaneously. In reality a seal fails, a balance loses tension, a roller flattens or a gear strips — one component at a time, on frames that have decades left in them.
California adds its own twist. A great deal of the state's housing stock carries aluminium sliders from the 1960s to 1980s, and homeowners are routinely told parts are unavailable for them. Usually they are not; they just are not sold at a hardware store.
Sometimes the honest answer is that nothing is broken at all. We would rather tell you that than sell you glass.

Why windows fail in California
Sun, dust, salt and age of stock account for most of what we see.
Relentless UV
Sun here degrades vinyl, glazing beads, weatherstrip and screen mesh far faster than the ratings assume. Components go brittle and snap rather than wearing gradually, particularly on south and west elevations.
Ageing aluminium sliders
Enormous numbers of California homes still run single-glazed aluminium sliders from the mid-century building booms. The frames are often fine; the rollers, latches and seals are long past their life and widely assumed to be unobtainable.
Dust and salt
Inland grit packs window tracks and seizes mechanisms, while coastal salt corrodes rollers, hardware and fasteners. The same window fails for opposite reasons depending which side of the hills it is on.

Window repair questions
My aluminium windows are from the 1970s. Are parts still available?
Usually yes. Mid-century aluminium sliders are extremely common in California and we can source or adapt rollers, latches and balances for most of them, despite what you may have been told.
The window will not stay open.
The sash balance has failed. Replacing balances is one of the most routine jobs we do and it does not require a new window.
My crank turns but the window does not move.
The gears inside the operator have stripped. The operator is replaced as a unit; the window itself is fine.
Can you repair just the screen?
Yes, and it is one of our most requested jobs. We rescreen your existing frames or build new frames to size.
How much does window repair cost?
It depends entirely on what failed. Hardware and rescreening sit at the low end, glass costs more and varies with size and type. You get a firm price on site and the estimate is free.
