Broken or Shattered Window Glass
A broken window glass panel is an immediate security exposure and a weather exposure. In California's climate, an open window panel in summer means heat gain and lost air conditioning. Cracked Window Glass Panel
A cracked glass panel needs to be replaced before it fails completely. In single-pane glass, a crack typically propagates across the full panel over time from thermal cycling and vibration. In tempered glass, a crack has compromised the internal stress that gives tempered glass its strength and makes its shattering pattern predictable. A cracked tempered panel can shatter suddenly without additional impact. CDW replaces cracked glass panels in both single-pane and tempered configurations.
Foggy or Cloudy Glass Between the Panes
Fogging between the panes of a double or triple-pane window is a failed insulated glass unit seal. When the IGU seal fails, outside air enters the sealed space between the panes and moisture in that air condenses on the interior glass surfaces when temperatures change. The result is a persistent foggy or cloudy appearance that doesn't wipe away because it's between the glass layers, not on the surface. The IGU assembly must be replaced to resolve the fogging. The outer frame and sash can typically be reused, making IGU replacement significantly less expensive than full window replacement.
Chipped Window Glass
A chip in a window glass panel is a stress concentration point that can propagate into a full crack from thermal cycling, vibration, or impact. Small chips on the glass edge are particularly likely to propagate because the glass edge is already a point of stress. CDW assesses chips for propagation risk and advises on whether monitoring is appropriate or replacement is warranted based on the chip's location and depth.
Glass Seal Failure Causing Condensation
Condensation on the interior surface of a window glass panel, not between the panes, indicates that the glass surface temperature is falling below the dew point of the interior air. This is a ventilation and humidity issue rather than a glass failure. Condensation between the panes, which appears as fogging that doesn't wipe away, is an IGU seal failure. CDW distinguishes between the two on arrival and advises on the correct response for each.
Impact-Damaged Safety Glass
Safety glass in door applications, sidelights, and floor-level windows is required by California building code to be tempered or laminated. A cracked or broken safety glass panel in a code-required location must be replaced with the correct safety glass specification rather than standard float glass. CDW replaces impact-damaged safety glass with tempered or laminated glass meeting the applicable California building code specification for the specific location.
Stress Cracks From Frame or Foundation Movement
Stress cracks in window glass that occur without impact are typically caused by frame movement from foundation settlement, seismic activity, or thermal expansion of the frame at a rate different from the glass. A stress crack typically originates at the glass edge and propagates across the panel in a curved or branching pattern rather than the straight line of an impact crack. CDW identifies stress crack patterns and assesses whether frame movement is ongoing before recommending replacement, because replacing glass in a frame that's still moving produces another stress crack on the same timeline.
UV-Degraded or Discolored Glass
Some older glass types, particularly older tempered glass produced before current manufacturing standards, can develop a slight purple or brown tint from prolonged UV exposure. This is a characteristic of the iron content of the glass reacting to UV over decades rather than a defect. Modern low-iron glass doesn't exhibit this discoloration. CDW replaces UV-discolored glass panels with current specification glass where the discoloration is affecting visibility or aesthetics.
