Door Hard to Open or Completely Stuck
A sliding glass door that's become difficult or impossible to open is the most common repair call CDW receives. The cause is almost always worn rollers that can no longer support the door's weight correctly, a damaged or debris-filled track obstructing the roller path, or frame expansion from California's heat tightening the door's fit. CDW inspects all three before recommending any part.
Sliding Glass Door Off Track
A door that has come off its track doesn't get put back on by force. The door came off for a reason, and that reason will put it back off again if it's not addressed. Worn rollers that dropped the door low enough to exit the track, a bent track section the door jumped, or a frame that shifted from earthquake activity and changed the track geometry are the most common causes. CDW identifies the underlying cause before reinstalling the door.
Broken or Cracked Glass Panel
A cracked sliding glass door panel is a security failure and a weatherproofing failure at the same time. Most sliding glass doors use tempered safety glass, and a crack in a tempered panel has compromised internal stress that can cause sudden complete shattering without additional impact. CDW replaces broken and cracked sliding glass door panels with the correct glass specification for the specific door.
Lock or Latch Won't Engage
A sliding glass door that won't lock is a security problem. The most common causes are a worn latch mechanism that no longer reaches the strike plate correctly, a misaligned door that prevents the latch from engaging, or a corrosion-damaged strike plate. Along the California coast, salt air accelerates lock hardware corrosion and makes latch failure more common than in inland locations. CDW tests the full lock mechanism and door alignment before recommending any replacement.
Worn or Failed Rollers
Roller wear is the most common cause of sliding glass door problems in California. Standard rollers last five to ten years in moderate conditions, but California's coastal salt air and inland heat cycles shorten that range for heavily used doors. As rollers wear, the door drops in the track and the door edge drags against the track surface, progressively increasing resistance until the door becomes very hard or impossible to open. CDW replaces rollers with the correct size, material, and load rating for the specific door.
Damaged or Bent Track
The bottom track carries the full contact load of the door's rollers throughout its service life. Debris impact, foot traffic on the track, and heat-related warping can all bend or damage it. A bent track creates uneven rolling resistance, accelerates roller wear at the damaged section, and can cause the door to jump the track entirely. CDW repairs localized track damage where the structure is sound and replaces the full track where the damage is too extensive.
Drafts and Air Leaks Through a Closed Door
A closed sliding glass door that lets in drafts is losing conditioned air continuously. In California's summers, that means air conditioning loss. The cause is almost always deteriorated weatherstripping, a frame seal gap, or a door sitting slightly out of alignment. California's UV exposure degrades weatherstripping faster than most homeowners realize, and a seal that performed well when the door was installed may be failing within a few years in high-sun locations.
Frame Warped or Misaligned
A frame that has warped or shifted out of alignment changes the door's fit and operation. Humidity changes, foundation movement, and earthquake activity are common causes in California. A misaligned frame produces a door that's hard to slide, doesn't seal correctly, and may be impossible to lock. CDW assesses frame alignment as part of every diagnostic inspection.
Door Rattling in the Frame
A sliding glass door that rattles when closed has a clearance problem between the door and its frame. Worn weatherstripping that no longer fills the gap, a door that has dropped from roller wear and is sitting lower than designed, or a frame that has shifted slightly are the most common causes. Weatherstripping Deteriorated
California's UV exposure is particularly hard on sliding glass door weatherstripping. High-sun locations on south and west-facing walls can degrade seal materials within three to five years. UV-degraded weatherstripping hardens, cracks, and compresses flat, losing its ability to seal the gap between the door and frame. CDW replaces weatherstripping with material rated for California's UV and temperature conditions.
